Agents for the other sma ll nation in the conflict decide to set the ship adrift that sa me night. Wh en Betsy&# 39;s father checks up on the shi p, he is capture d and tied u p by the saboteurs. Betsy hears his cr y for help and boards the shi p to look for him, just before it is cut loose. The Navigat or drifts out into the Pacific Ocean. Th e tw o unwitting passengers eventually f ind each other. At first, they have great diffi culty looking after themsel ves, but ada pt after a few weeks. At one point, th ey sight a navy ship and hoist a b rightly-colored fl ag, not realizing it signals that the ship is under quarantine. As a result, t he oth er vess el turns awa y. Finally, th e ship grounds itself near a n inhab ited tropical island and springs a leak. While Rollo dons a deep sea d iving su it and sub merges to patch the h ole, the bla ck natives ca noe out and take Betsy captive. Wh en Rollo emer ges from the ocean, the natives are scared off, enabling him t o res cue Betsy a nd tak e her b ack to the ship. The native s return and try t o board the ship. Af ter a f ierce strug gle, Rollo and Bets y try to escape in a s mall dinghy. It starts to sink, an d the nativ es swiftly overtake them in their canoes.
