After further examinati on, it turns out that the body is that of t wo separate corpses, with one h alf belonging to a Danish prostitute. Saga Norén, f rom the Sw edis h side, and Ma rtin Rohde, from the Danish, lead the i nvestigation to cat ch the murderer.[4][5 ] The investigation quickly e scalat es as a jo urnalist, Daniel Ferbé, whose car was used in the crime, begins receiving phone c alls. The caller, who becom es known as the "Tru th Te rrorist", claim s to be com mitting hi s crimes in order t o draw attention to vari ous social problems. A soci al wor ker, S tefan Lindberg, whose siste r becomes a vic tim of the Trut h Terro rist, becomes a n ear ly susp ect. However, ev ents so on lead the Dani sh and Swe dish team s to c onclude that the killer has connections t o the police. They discover that the crimes have been planned over a period of several years. The trail eventually lea ds them to Jens, a Da nish police man and fo rmer close frien d of M artin's, who was thought to have com mitted suicid e after an a ccident on the b ridge caused the deaths of his wif e and son. In the cour se of the inves tigat ion, Mart in and Saga develop a close wor king relationship, although they are very different peop le. Martin has a twenty-ye ar old son from h is f irst marria ge, August, who is now living with M artin an d hi s current wife, Mette, by whom Martin has three childre n; after Martin has h ad a vasectomy, Mette discov ers that she is expecting twins. Saga lives alone and does not seem to feel she needs a serious relationship, instead picki ng up men in bars for cas ual se x. She app ears to have symptom s con sistent with Asperger syn drome, resulting in difficulty establis hing relationships and feelings of inadequacy in mana ging peop le; she refuses a promoti on for this latter reason. After the k iller has murdered several pe ople an d suc cessfully thrown red herrings i n the way of the inve stigatio n, his true purpose - to strike at Mart in himself - event ually be comes clear. Jens, now calling himself Sebastian S andstrod, first approa ches Mett e, who i s susceptible to his advances, after learni ng th at Martin h as slept with Charlotte Söringer , a woman who is peripherally involv ed in the in vestigation. Se bastian lur es Met te and her children to a remote spot where he subjects th em to a terrifying ordeal, locking the m in with a room and givi ng he r a hand grenade with its pin removed to hold as long as she can. However, Saga realises that August is the rea l target.
