Among other things, Patch 5.4 will add new main story quests. As Square Enix describes, “Following the grand conclusion of the Shadowbringers story in Patch 5.3, players will set out on a new adventure” in the December update. The patch will also introduce the third installment in the Eden raid series, as well as the next chapter in the Sorrow of Werlyt questline.
Beyond that, Patch 5.4 will also bring the dreaded Emerald Weapon to Final Fantasy XIV. Players will be able to challenge it in both normal and extreme difficulties. There will also be a new dungeon, Matoya’s Relict, which is going to be part of the new main story questline. Beyond the new content updates,
Sony is giving the PlayStation 4 one more big update before the PS5 arrives, and it’s particularly good news for parents. A version 8.00 update releasing today makes multiple additions, including simpler and more adaptable parental controls. Limits on communication and viewing user-made content are now lumped together to make it “easier for parents to understand.” Crucially, kids can now ask for permission to use communications in specific games — you can make an exception if you know a young one will be talking to friends.
Not everything is positive. The 8.00 update removes user-made events and the creation of private communities. You can still use private communities that already exist, but they’ll clearly dwindle without the option to make more. Sony hasn’t explained the move, but we’ve asked for comment.
There are more additions that might offset that decision. Party and Messages are now more closely connected, with a new interface that uses the same groups for party voice chats and messages. Two-factor authentication finally supports third-party authenticator apps during activation as well as sign-ins across PS4, mobile apps and the web. And you can finally mute all mics from the Quick Menu — you don’t have to wade through menus (if your headset doesn’t have a mute switch) just to take a quick break from the action.
Sony is also updating its Remote Play apps for phones and computers to enable PS5 connections, although that clearly won’t be useful until the new console’s November 12th debut.
You might not want to rush to update to 8.00 when there are reports (albeit a handful) of party and friend issues. We’ve asked Sony about those as well. Even so, it’s hard not to be at least a bit sentimental about this update. While there will likely be other revisions, this
Sony’s latest PlayStation 4 software update is launching today, tweaking a host of existing features.
As the PlayStation Blog details, there will be updates to Party and Messages, bringing noticeable changes to the UI, streamlining them, and linking them more closely. Instead of having separate groups, both Party and Messages will now use the same groups for both voice chats and messaging.
In the Quick Menu, the update is also adding a rather self-explanatory Mute All Microphones feature, letting players, well, mute all mics while playing.
Sony is also adding new pre-set avatars, including ones from Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and many more.
The Parental Controls are being simplified by folding Communicating With Other Players and Viewing Content Created By Other Players into a single Communication And User Generated Content setting. This should make it easier for parents to monitor their kids’ gaming interactions.
Besides the removal of the ability to create Events and updates to the Remote Play App, the update brings a welcomed enhanced 2-Step Verification, which will allow for third-party authenticator apps.

The BBC Micro Bit mini-computer – used by millions of schoolchildren across the world – will receive its first major update since 2016.
The new model includes a speaker and microphone, as well as artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities.
Formerly a BBC-led project, it is now led by a foundation that aims to make coding accessible for children.
The device will be released next month with prices starting at £11.50.
“The purpose of the Micro Bit is to help children unlock their creative potential and learn how to shape the world around them,” Gareth Stockdale, chief executive of the Micro Bit Educational Foundation, said.
“Learning coding and computational thinking can enhance their life chances in the 21st Century.”
Since its launch, the Micro Bit has been designed for education, with an estimated 25 million children learning computer skills on the device in over 60 countries.
The previous model launched in the UK in 2016, with the BBC giving away a free Micro Bit to every year seven student.
It is now used in most secondary schools, as well as primary schools, universities and libraries.
“The Micro Bit has a low floor and high ceiling – you can make it as advanced as you wish but it can also be very basic,” said Keith Quille, a lecturer at the Technological University Dublin who runs free Micro Bit sessions for children and teachers.
“We teach it at primary schools and at university degree level – because you don’t need lots of other tools to make it work, it’s very easy to use.”
The foundation has also donated 5,000 devices to families in the UK, to help with home schooling during the coronavirus pandemic.
