Windows 10 will start blocking drivers if it can’t verify software publisher

With yesterday’s Patch Tuesday security update, Microsoft has flagged a change in the way Windows verifies driver software that could spur a rise in driver errors for Windows 10 users.

Microsoft details the two driver-related error messages users of all supported versions of Windows 10 and Windows Server might see after installing the October Patch Tuesday security update.

The errors will happen if Windows can’t verify the publisher of the driver software or if the driver lacks a signature.

“When installing a third-party driver, you might receive the error, “Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software”. You might also see the error, “No signature was present in the subject” when attempting to view the signature properties using Windows Explorer,” Microsoft explains under known issues with this update for Windows 10 version 2004.

According to Microsoft, the error occurs when an improperly formatted catalog file is identified during validation by Windows when checking DER format encoded Public-Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS) #7 content.

“Starting with this release, Windows will require the validity of DER encoded PKCS#7 content in catalog files. Catalogs files must be signed per section 11.6 of describing DER-encoding for SET OF members in X.690,” Microsoft notes.

Microsoft lists the issue under known issues and resolved issues on the Windows 10 update health dashboard for each affected version of Windows 10.

If Windows 10 users do see these driver error messages, Microsoft recommends users to contact the driver vendor or device manufacturer (OEM) and ask them for an updated driver to correct the issue.

Microsoft has been working to shore up Windows 10 security against malicious drivers but these efforts have focused on its Secured-core PCs for business, such as the Surface Pro X.

Amazon Prime Day Start Time: When Does Prime Day Start Tonight?

After being delayed several months because of COVID-19, Amazon Prime Day 2020 is nearly here. Prime Day will begin tonight at midnight PT / 3 AM ET (October 13) and will run a full 48 hours as it has in recent years.

As usual, Prime Day will have thousands of deals available exclusively for Prime members across not only tech and gaming but also toys, furniture, fashion, housewares, and more. Of course, the elephant in the room is that Prime Day is now just over one month earlier than Black Friday, and it’s unclear how different Prime Day deals will be from those offered during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Naturally, Amazon is pushing people to get their holiday shopping done early during Prime Day, and with product shortages and longer shipping delays becoming commonplace this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, that’s probably the smart move. If you see a great deal during Prime Day, don’t assume you’ll see that same discount available during Black Friday.

Amazon Prime Day 2020 dates and times:

  • Start time: Tuesday, October 13 at 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET
  • End time: Wednesday, October 14 at 11:59 PM PT (2:59 AM ET on October 15)

Amazon hasn’t shared any specific gaming or tech deals yet, but we can expect steep discounts on games and accessories like controllers, headsets, keyboards, and more. Gaming memberships like PlayStation Plus and Game Pass Ultimate may see steep markdowns during Prime Day, so keep an eye out for those too. With next-gen consoles launching in November and the Switch still facing shortages, we don’t expect a ton of great console deals–though if you’re looking to buy a Switch, Nintendo will probably have some kind of bundle offer during Black Friday again this year.

Early Prime Day deals are

Space internet is ready for people to start using it, Elon Musk says

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said his space internet project is ready for public use following the latest launch of Starlink satellites.

SpaceX delivered a further 60 satellites into low-Earth orbit this week, bringing the total number close to 800.

The private space firm hopes to eventually launch tens of thousands of Starlink satellites to create a constellation capable of beaming high-speed broadband down to 99 per cent of the inhabited world.

“Once these satellites reach their target position, we will be able to roll out a fairly wide public beta in northern US and hopefully southern Canada,” Musk tweeted following the launch.

“Other countries to follow as soon as we receive regulatory approval.”

The Starlink network has already been tested on a limited scale, providing internet to emergency responders in the US following recent wildfires.

The Washington Emergency Management division was able to set up a Starlink-powered WiFi hotspot for residents in Malden last month after 80 per cent of the town was destroyed by fire.

Musk said at the time that SpaceX was prioritising emergency services and locations with no internet connectivity at all.

In April, the billionaire entrepreneur said that 800 satellites would be enough for “significant” global coverage, though speeds will be nowhere near the 100 megabits per second speed promised by SpaceX until the network grows.

“With performance that far surpasses that of traditional satellite internet, and a global network unbounded by ground infrastructure limitations, Starlink will deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable,” Starlink’s website states.

Areas that will fall within the public beta test include the Detroit metropolitan area
