Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the security, performance, and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, today launched Cloudflare Web Analytics to provide accurate, clear, and free analytics for anyone who cares about how their site is performing and doesn’t want to sacrifice their visitors’ privacy. Cloudflare Web Analytics is built on top of Cloudflare’s existing network, giving site owners insight into key traffic metrics at the edge. Now site owners have control over their own site data, eliminating the need for third-party scripts that can track their users and help retarget them with advertising. Cloudflare Web Analytics will be available, for free, to any website owner, whether they are an existing Cloudflare customer or not.
For website owners and businesses, analytics are the backbone of their online strategy. This data helps them understand how people find a website, what types of devices they are using, and what they do once they get to a website–critical information for creating a better experience for their online visitors. Before today, getting access to that data came at a price when using popular analytics tools created by ad-tech companies. Advertising-driven business models help ad-supported sites sell more ads and are gleaning lots of visitor and site data in return for site analytics. As a result, website owners have to trade user privacy for data on how their own sites were performing. What’s worse, the tradeoff doesn’t ensure that site owners get accurate data because visitors with ad blockers often aren’t counted. “The big ad-supported platforms were hoovering off more and more data on what was going on online and it had sort of crossed the creepiness threshold level,” Matthew Prince, chief executive of Cloudflare told SC Media. “At the same time, and it’s related, you are getting this patchwork of regulations all around the world, which want to control ad platforms. But at the same time, they’re really raising a hurdle for smaller organizations that want to exist online and know if their websites are being read, but don’t care about ads.”
Prince said Cloudflare’s drop-in solution will not store or profit off user data in any way, instead earning the company profit through goodwill and the chance to advertise integration with the Cloudflare denial of service protection and edge computing networks.
The Cloudflare platform will not be able to reproduce all the data of analytics platforms with more pervasive tracking, which can compile user behavior across the internet for a complete profile of everyone who reaches the site,
Non-profit organisation Code for Change is offering high school students the opportunity to get experience with front-end web development and coding.
The free-to-use training platform works using CodeJIKA programme. It has been used in over 250 schools since its launch in 2017.
“Our goal is to build a vibrant eco-system of student-run coding clubs in secondary schools throughout Africa,” said the company on its website.
Code for Change has major investment from key partners including Google, HKLM and Adobe which all make offering this key skill feature easier.
South Africa’s education is attempting to reform to meet new world standards which include students learning to code earlier in their schooling career.
Currently, many only find out about computer science once they’re at university which is considered quite late to pick up these skills.
CodeJIKA teaches foundational coding, web development, and computer science skills, specifically with schools and communities that are mostly offline or rely on phones and mobile data.
“Code for Change is building an eco-system of coding skills and digital entrepreneurs in secondary schools to help build the new South African economy,” it said.
A Washington town ravaged by wildfires this month has been supplied with an internet connection thanks to Elon Musk’s “Starlink” project.
The state’s Emergency Management Division shared a photo of a SpaceX antenna on its Twitter profile yesterday—taking advantage of Musk’s in-progress satellite constellation, which has been pitched as way of providing high speed broadband across the globe.
Authorities indicated that it was supplied for first responders working to rebuild the small town of Malden. On September 8, police said 80 percent of the area, including homes and city government buildings, had been totally destroyed by flames.
“Happy to have the support of @SpaceX‘s Starlink internet as emergency responders look to help residents rebuild the town of Malden, WA that was overcome by wildfires earlier this month,” WA Emergency Management wrote in a caption.
It added: “Malden is an area where fiber and most of the town burned down. Without this equipment, it would have been much harder for folks to get internet in that area.” In a later update, the account said that the equipment was provided for free.
In a tweet on Monday, SpaceX’s billionaire CEO Musk said he was “glad” to help and noted the project was now “prioritizing emergency responders and locations with no internet connectivity.”
