SAN ANTONIO — Oct. 13, 2020 — The System Performance and Real Time Analysis (SPARTA), an advanced electronic warfare (EW) measurement and analysis software system developed by Southwest Research Institute, was recognized by R&D World magazine as one of the 100 most significant innovations of 2020.

Defense systems on fighter jets and critical aircraft use electronic countermeasures (ECM) that emit electronic smoke screens to thwart radar or other detection systems to deny accurate targeting information to an enemy. SPARTA evaluates these defense systems to ensure electronic countermeasures send a correct countersignal for a given radar “ding.”

“Because current electronic countermeasure systems are inadequate, we developed SPARTA to better determine if today’s most advanced jammers are accurately generating desired responses,” said Finley Hicks, a staff engineer in SwRI’s Defense and Intelligence Solutions Division. “SwRI leadership felt so strongly about protecting the crew of our fighter jets, they agreed to internally fund the development of this system.”

Depending on the scenario, ECMs will create the illusion of multiple targets or make the real target disappear or move about randomly to protect aircraft from guided missiles. Jamming also creates radio signals to disrupt communications, creating electronic noise that degrades or denies targeting capabilities.

“Conventional electronic tester systems struggle to determine if anti-radar jammer systems give the correct response for any given radar stimulus,” Hicks said. “SPARTA, however, measures every parameter — even in a highly congested and noisy electromagnetic spectrum. This represent a leap forward in ECM processing, analysis, visualization and reporting capabilities.”

The system provides automated and manual real-time EW analysis. It can evaluate systems during the

Hasura Wins InfoWorld’s Best of Open Source Software Award

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hasura, the data access infrastructure company, today announced that it has won InfoWorld’s Best of Open Source Software Award, also known as the Bossie Award: https://www.infoworld.com/article/3575858/the-best-open-source-software-of-2020.html. Hasura’s open source product GraphQL engine has been downloaded more than 78 million times and has more than 18,500 GitHub stars.

Each year, InfoWorld’s Bossies recognize the best open source software for businesses and IT professionals. InfoWorld’s central mission has always been to identify the most innovative products available to developers and IT organizations. Increasingly, those products — ranging from software development tools to cloud infrastructure software to big data platforms — come from open source projects. Bossie winners are chosen by InfoWorld editors and expert reviewers that work in IT and software development – who have practical experience with the leading open source technologies.

“Like a benevolent Borg, open source sweeps across the software universe year after year, bringing innovation to everything it touches,” said Doug Dineley, Executive Editor of InfoWorld. “From better ways to build web applications or machine learning models or automated workflows to faster and more powerful distributed databases and analytics, our 2020 Bossie Award winners will amaze you with what cutting-edge open source software has to offer.”

Organizations already have data they want to use but it is trapped in silos. Rather than trying to use outdated approaches to overcome this problem like consolidating fast-moving operational data into static data warehouses or datalakes, Hasura provides a new option: simply connect applications by federating access to where the data lives, using a modern API-based approach that includes security, governance and scalability as standard features. With support for PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server, using Hasura means developers aren’t forced to migrate data to make it accessible from their applications.

Hasura’s ability to

Senator Witkos Receives Computer Science Leadership Award

Press release from the Office of Senator Kevin Witkos:

Oct. 11, 2020

State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) is honored to announce that he has recently received a Leadership Award from the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and ReadyCT for his work in supporting computer science education in Connecticut. The award was recently presented during the CSTA & ReadyCT Virtual Summit held on October 2nd.

“I am honored to have received this award and I’m so proud of the efforts we’ve made over the past few years in ensuring computer science becomes part of the curriculum for students across Connecticut and that our teachers recognize the importance of this field. With many industries and sectors of our economy becoming more technological and digital, computer science skills are more important than ever. I’m proud of the bipartisan work that went into passing this legislation and so thankful for the work of CSTA, ReadyCT, Code.Org, and all of the hard working educators and computer science advocates across Connecticut” said Senator Witkos.

“Last year I had the chance to visit with the Girls Who Code group at Avon High School and was extremely impressed by the passion that the students and their teachers share for coding. Coding is something that students of all ages can excel at and I’m excited for the future of computer science and coding in our schools” added Senator Witkos.

In 2019, Senator Witkos introduced a bill which ultimately became part of Public Act 19-128 An Act Concerning Computer Science Instruction in Public Schools.

Among other things, the bill does the following:

1. allows the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) to develop a model internship program for technology and advanced manufacturing (§ 7);

2. adds computer science to the Connecticut Employment and Training Commission’s (CETC) statewide plan regarding
