Why Apple Quietly Discontinued urBeats3 Headphones

KEY POINTS

  • It has quietly discontinued the older urBeats3 headphones
  • The new device is cheaper than the older one

Apple has announced its newest and cheapest wireless earbuds yet and quietly discontinued a pair of wired earphones that it has been selling for quite some time now.

Cupertino tech giant Apple launched the new Beats Flex, a pair of wireless earbuds that aren’t truly wireless like the AirPods. At $50, the new device takes its place as the company’s cheapest offering for those who want a pair of wireless earphones for less than $100.

The new Beats Flex replaces the urBeats3, which was previously sold for $60. The older audio accessory, which was available in Lightning and 3.5mm versions, has been quietly discontinued and is no longer offered in Apple’s stores.

Those who try to go to the website previously used for the urBeats3 will be redirected to the webpage for the new Beats Flex. The older device’s discontinuation means that Beats no longer offers cheap wired headphones. Those who prefer to use such audio accessories can still buy the wired Beats EP headphones at $130 or the Apple-branded EarPods at $19.

Meanwhile, the new Beats Flex is largely similar to the Beats X wireless headphones in terms of design. It has a wire connecting the left and right earbuds, which can also be magnetically attached to one another when not in use and hung on the user’s neck.

Apple iPhone 12 Gets a Tentative Thumbs Up From Wall Street

Apple’s  (AAPL) – Get Report much-anticipated iPhone 12 lineup revealed Tuesday received a generally tentative set of upward thumbs from Wall Street analysts, who praised the advent of 5G and the pricing of the handsets but were slightly more suspect of how much demand there will be for the new models.

Apple on Tuesday unveiled four different iPhone models, including the iPhone 12 mini, a 5.4-inch model starting at $699; a 6.1-inch device starting at $799, a 6.1-inch Pro model starting at $999, and a 6.7-inch pro model starting at $1,099.

Apple also introduced its HomePod Mini smart speaker, which includes a touch panel on its top for play/pause and volume options, along with a light-up display to indicate use of the Siri assistant.

“The pricing dynamics are the killer app for the phone launch,” Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar wrote in a note to clients. “Pricing was lower than our expectation, which is important in the current global pandemic.”

“iPhone 12 mini hits the magic $699 price point,” Loup Ventures’ Gene Munster wrote on Twitter. “That’s a big deal and slightly expands iPhone’s addressable market. This is the first time in 7 years (iPhone 5S) that smaller form factor is part of flagship lineup.”

Wedbush Securities’ Daniel Ives also expressed optimism that the pricing lineup would be enough to convince current iPhone owners to upgrade, noting that “350 million of 950 million iPhones worldwide are currently in the window of an upgrade opportunity,” which he believes will “translate into an unprecedented upgrade cycle,” particularly in China.

Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall also was impressed with the iPhone lineup additions, noting in his own research note that Apple’s iPhone event had a “few unexpected twists,” including the introduction of the iPhone 12 mini and Magsafe charging, though he

Apple Pay Landing Page Goes Live on Apple’s Mexico Website, Suggesting Imminent Launch

Apple added an Apple Pay landing page to its regional Mexico website late on Tuesday, indicating the mobile payment system could launch in the country imminently.

Way back in March there were suggestions that Apple Pay could be coming to Mexico, after reports that some iPhone users in the country had been able to add their Banregio cards to the Wallet app, with only the verification process failing.

Cards from banks other than Banregio were not able to be added to the Wallet app on the ‌‌iPhone‌‌, suggesting ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ in Mexico could be limited to Banregio at launch.

That’s still uncertain, since the ‌Apple Pay‌ page on Apple’s Mexican website offers no launch date and doesn’t list any banks that will integrate with the service. All it says is ‌Apple Pay‌ will be compatible with “credit and debit cards of the most important payment networks, issued by various banks,” which sounds a lot like Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.

When ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ launches in Mexico, it will be the second country in Latin America to support the payments service. Apple launched ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ in Brazil in 2018, but has not expanded it to other Latin America countries. ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ has also been available in the United States and Canada for years.

Apple maintains a complete list of the countries where ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ is available on its support site, and we have a detailed Apple Pay roundup with everything you need to know about Apple’s payments service.

(Thanks, Luis!)
