Samsung has launched a UV steriliser box for smartphones and other items at a time when we needed it most. We’ve been using the box for a couple of weeks now, but this story will not be a review, simply because we aren’t medical professionals who can unequivocally say that the box effectively kills germs and viruses. Having said that, using the box did give us peace of mind and we hope it should be there in every home post this pandemic.
Getting the Samsung UV Steriliser is advisable not only to prevent germs and viruses settling on your smartphone and other items during the pandemic, but it should become a norm even if there wasn’t a global crisis. Smartphones are probably the dirtiest objects we use in our daily lives as we keep them on dirty surfaces, use them in bathrooms and take them everywhere with us. Whether you go to the market, a restaurant or visit family members, the phone and other objects like keys, chargers, TWS earphones and almost everything you need to use on-the-go come with you.
Devices like the Samsung UV Steriliser help in keeping bacteria and germs away from your personal articles so that they remain clean and hygienic. It takes about 10 minutes to clean your smartphone or objects and Samsung claims it removes 99% of bacteria and germs, including E. Coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans.
Having said that, there is no conclusive proof that it can kill the coronavirus from your smartphone. To Samsung’s credit, they don’t claim it does either, however the chances of it removing unwanted germs is higher than having no sterilisation process at all. The steriliser uses UVC light which can deter most germs that can cause other illnesses if you aren’t careful. If you use a smartphone that supports wireless charging, the UV box will also charge your phone, Galaxy Buds while it is getting cleaned inside. If you intend to use the box as a standalone wireless charger for your device on the nightstand, we recommend charging your phone and other devices with the lid open.
You see, wireless charging creates a lot of heat and if you charge your phone with the lid closed, it can cause damage to your phone and the battery since there won’t be any heat dissipation. If you are cleaning your phone for 10 minutes, then keeping the lid closed and having it charged while cleaning is not a problem. However, if you plan to place your phone for wireless charging overnight, keeping the lid open is recommended to prevent any accidents. Do note, the wireless charger in the box does not provide any fast wireless charging even with Samsung devices so if you are looking for something faster, Samsung makes quite a few fast wireless chargers themselves.
How to Use The Sterilising Feature
Using the sterilising feature is fairly simple as there is only a single button to turn it on/off. Once you switch on the sterilisation by pressing the button, the box will make a single beeping sound and also notify you with a green LED light. The box will turn off itself in 10 minutes by making another beeping sound. The wireless charging feature does not switch off once the sterilisation process has finished however as we said earlier, we recommend opening the lip right after for trapped heat to dissipate.
How Much Does It Cost?
This is where you will be left astonished as the Samsung UV Steriliser does not break the bank. It costs only Rs 3,600 in India and we highly recommend getting this if you want your belongings to be hygienic. In fact, owning this gadget is essential at a time like this when we feel this pandemic nightmare will never be over.
