Huawei Technologies Co. Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou failed to convince a Canadian judge to grant her access to confidential documents pertaining to her extradition fight.
Meng has pressed for additional disclosure about the circumstances of her arrest at Vancouver’s airport on a U.S. handover request in December 2018. She argues her arrest was unlawful and that her extradition case should be dismissed.
In August, she sought an order from the Supreme Court of British Columbia to force the Canadian government to authorize full access to documents she said had been redacted or withheld arbitrarily. Canada argued that divulging them would violate confidentiality agreements with clients and third parties.
Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes “upheld a majority of Canada’s privilege claims,” Canada’s Department of Justice said in a statement late Thursday, without providing further details on the ruling. Holmes’ decision wasn’t immediately available from the courthouse after hours.
It’s the latest setback for Meng — eldest daughter of Huawei’s billionaire founder Ren Zhengfei — who lives under house arrest at a Vancouver mansion she owns. In May, Meng saw her first shot at release quashed when Holmes ruled that her case met a key test of Canada’s extradition law. Three months later, a federal court rejected her bid to access documents withheld on national security grounds.
One of Meng’s legal strategies is to show that there was an abuse of process so serious during her arrest that it warrants throwing out her extradition case. She accuses Canadian border agents, police and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation of unlawfully using the pretext of an immigration check to get her to disclose evidence they could use against her. High-end speaker company Devialet is taking on Apple with its first pair of wireless earbuds, the £279/$299 Devialet Gemini.
Devialet is best-known for making pricey speakers targeted at audiophiles, winning plaudits for its classic, $2,000 Phantom speakers. The company’s backers include Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn, which produces the iPhone, as well as Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
This is the first time the company is venturing into headphones, with an eye to a broader audience.
The Devialet Gemini earbuds are about $50 pricier than Apple’s AirPods Pro, which come in at £249/$249.
Devialet says Gemini’s features will include:
- Devialet’s high-quality audio engineering
- 8 hours of battery life in each charge, or six with active noise cancellation enabled
- Dust and water resistance
- Bluetooth support
- A charge case, with replaceable battery, and wireless Qi charging or via USB-C
- Active noise cancellation comes with “transparency” mode that allows you to hear more background noise
The earbuds will be available to pre-order online from October 10. They’ll be available to buy directly in the US from partners like Best Buy and Amazon from November 25. According to Devialet’s site, the company isn’t committing to a shipping time, only guaranteeing it will ship by or before December 15 or else issue a refund. In the UK, Devialet Gemini will also be available through retailers such as Harrods and Selfridges.

(Bloomberg) — France is preparing incentives for consumers to shift spending habits to used electronics, in an attempt to lower the impact on the environment and provide a boost to local ecommerce startups.
The government said it will deploy a scoring system on devices’ re-usability from January, and will set aside 21 million euros ($25 million) from its stimulus plan to fund re-usability startups and projects.
Environment minister Barbara Pompili and her colleague for Digital Affairs, Cedric O, told Bloomberg that the government is in talks to boost second-hand purchasing, but didn’t detail the plans which are still being finalized. O said a new form of tax on goods was unlikely because companies would shift the cost on consumers.

“We want to incite people who want to buy a handset to think first about refurbished ones,” Pompili said.
Selling refurbished handsets has been a long-standing business. Both Apple Inc. and Samsung offer second-hand phones on their websites, and the global market for used smartphones is expected to
